Traveling the Historic National Road

Traveling the Historic National RoadFew things in history call to us across time from the beginnings of our nation. The Historic National Road is one of them. For more than 800 miles, it is a landscape of historic, cultural and archaeological significance, scenic beauty, bountiful recreation, and a journey through the lives and fortunes of the people that forged America. The Historic National Road is one of America’s great byways. Within 16 miles, you can visit two National Historic Landmarks. The Wheeling Suspension Bridge has carried travelers across the Ohio River since 1849 and West Virginia Independence Hall and Museum is considered the Civil War “Birthplace of West Virginia.” Numerous museums, parks, lakes, bike trails, entertainment, colorful shopping, and dining opportunities offer travelers a host of memorable experiences.
