Animals Running for Mayor in Rabbit Hash, Kentucky
The former mayor, a black Labrador retriever named Junior, died in May. The race to be his successor features a slew of dogs, plus a cat and a miniature donkey.
The elections began in 1998 as something of a farce: Communities were encouraged to celebrate Boone County’s bicentennial. The Rabbit Hash community decided to elect an honorary mayor.
“We thought it would be people. And it was people, at first,” Clare said. “It was kind of a spoof on politics and voting.”
Ten years ago, someone got the idea to enter a dog named Goofy in the race. Several other dogs jumped in, edging out the human candidates in the race. Goofy served for six years and also starred in the documentary, “Rabbit Hash: Center of the Universe.”

World Peace Bell
The World’s Largest Swinging Bell, “The World Peace Bell“, is installed at the Millennium Monument site in Newport, Kentucky and swings everyday at noon. In 1981, the Verdin Company, North America’s oldest bell and clock company, purchased historic St. Paul’s Church in Cincinnati, OH. After a two-year-long restoration was completed, the beautiful building houses the Verdin Company corporate headquarters, the World Peace Bell and the Clock Museum.
